I'm too Awesome for One Page...

You have one page to write down all your best qualities and past experiences… Go!

Sounds a little overhelming, right? A resume with every single achievement you have in your life, on the otherhand, is a little overwhelming as well. According to a study conducted by TheLadders, recruiters spend on average about six seconds looking at a resume before determining whether you are fit for the job or not.

How can anyone be impressive in six seconds? Well thankfully, there are some great resources and tips out there to help you, including me!

First, you want your resume to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. You want it to look clear and concise, making it easy to locate the most important information. You don’t need to write a novel for each achievement either. Just share the most vital ones and let your potential interview be a time to go into further detail.

Since you are only sharing the most important information, you need your back-up claims to be just as useful. Therefore, you should delve into the use of power words. Utilize strong, effective words that can be used to describe your qualities and your past experiences.

Be sure to use also arrange your resume into bullet points, as hiring officials do not want to read big groups of text. With the use of bullet points their attention is broken up to the whole document. Within those bullet points, be sure to use very short descriptions. These sentences do not even need to be complete and should almost read as a telegram.

Avoid using personal details about yourself including age and gender. It's sad to say, but people do discriminate and you want as little bias as possible when it comes to the analyzation of your resume. You want employers to see your achievements and your best characteistics, not your personal information. This also goes to say, do not put a picture on your resume. Doing so will just allow for another way to just be judged upon appearance. You don’t want to be hired somewhere because you are attractive. You should want to work somewhere that wants you for your talents.

Last but not least, don’t lie. Recruiters may be smarter than you give them credit for and being caught in a lie will immediately cause you to lose credibility. It isn’t worth it. They also will ask you about things on your resume during your interview and if you cannot back up those claims, you will look like a fool and will not get the job. It is essential to be honest and transparent.

Think of you resume as an opening paragraph to a news article. If the opening is not constructed in a way to catch your attention, you are more than likely not going to keep reading. Same goes for a resume; if there is nothing to make you stand out and it is put together poorly, recruiters will not be interested and you will not get the job you are working to get.
