I'd like to order the Salmon

You’re approaching the interviewer. They extend their arm out to greet you. You give them a completely limp, fish-hand back. This is awkward.

There’s little room for a comeback at this point. This handshake is not going to be something that slips their mind.

The way you express yourself nonverbally is just as important, if not more so, as how you would express yourself verbally. You are being analyzed from the time you walk in through the door until the time you exit. From what you wear to how you sit, or even that nervous twirl you do with your fingers; the notice it all.

You want everything you do to resemble confidence. This means dressing professionally in a flattering outfit. The way you outwardly express yourself through your appearance says a lot. If you are dress professionally, interviewers will know you take this time seriously.

Your greatest accessory to your outfit, however, is your smile. Smiling creates a comfort between the conversation and shows a general interest. Of course you don’t want a smile plastered to your face the entire interview. There are times where the conversation is serious and should be treated in that same manner. However, be sure to throw in a smile whenever you can and most importantly when you are first greeting the interviewer.

To accompany that smile is your eye contact. Looking an interviewer directly in the eyes for the duration of your conversation shows engagement and confidence. It also keeps you from missing anything the interviewer might say.

Be sure to sit up in your seat and lean slightly towards the interviewer. This also shows engagement as slumping back is lazy and sloppy-looking. The interviewer wants to hire someone who wants to be there, so be sure to look like it.

Also be careful with your hands. It is great to utilize them when you are speaking but do not use too many hand gestures as they may be distracting.

Lastly, leave your phone in the car! It may be strange and you may feel naked without it, but one hour without your phone is worth it when you are investing yourself into a career. Even when you are sitting, waiting in the lobby, it looks rude and impatient to sit around on your phone.

Everything you don’t say, still says something. Go into your interview keeping that in mind and you should crush it!!!
